Danny "The Voice Is Miles Better Than Last Year"

I was one of the first radio Djs to play their music in the UK so it was great to see The Script nominated for a Brit, at last month's nominations launch evening at London's Savoy Hotel.

Script frontman and 2013 Brit nominee Danny O'Donoghue talked to me about music, touring and TV and revealed that the new season of BBC 1's "The Voice" is "absolutely miles better than last season; by far."

Danny recently completed filming the blind auditions for this year's competition, alongside with 'coaches' Tom Jones, will.i.am and Jessie J who all return to the big red chairs.

Speaking to me at the launch of the 2013 Brit Awards, where The Script were nominated for Best International Group, Danny admitted that the show will feature some major changes this year;
"We've made a lot of changes now including the knock out elimination rounds as we work down from 12 to 6 and we can steal artists from each other too, which is really interesting. So if I think they got voted off for an unfair reason, then I can pull them onto my team so it's really really good! It's exactly like the music industry, let's put it that way…but I think I've got three chances of winning within my 12. But look at last year, you never know who's going to win. But there's more rivalry between the coaches this year man..!"

Alongside his coaching duties on The Voice, Danny and The Script lads are currently touring Europe, promoting their recent album #3 Europe and are enjoying pan-European chart success with "Hall of Fame" which features will.i.am Danny's co-star from The Voice. Danny told me "Come on we're soon to be platinum in America which is a million sales, we've been number one in Germany and Austria..so it's a good year man, it's a good year for everybody. And Will's been number one and two in Germany..!"

The band are also looking forward to returning to the UK for their biggest tour to date. Smiling,  Danny told me "..we're playing a 28 date UK arena tour which is like wow, a while ago you probably saw us playing some obscure venue…but now're all had a chat about what we can do to up the level for the show as we really wanna give everyone bigger bang for your buck. Not that we haven't before but we're now playing bigger places so we definitely wanna up the game.."

And after receiving a nod from their UK music industry with their Brit nomination, does Danny think the band can actually win, at the big ceremony at London's 02?

"No, we don't need it right now. Genuinely younger bands need this more than us. We've been going for four year now and we've gone from strength to strength. We've never been a critically acclaimed band but it's never stopped us from getting to where are today. You know yourself, you were from the start. So to all those asking if we're going to win, I'm like no and even we do, I'd give it to a younger band as they need it right now.."

The band have also confirmed "If You Could See Me Now" as their next single, which is a deeply personal record for Danny. "It's an emotional song, we're an emotional band..the premise of the video is all the things that our parents have missed, since they passed away, it's like a snapshot of the past four years for us so I'm glad we've got the visuals to match it.."

Danny stars In The Voice, which returns to BBC 1 this Spring and if you haven't seen The Script live; go see them when they tour the UK,  later this year.
