A Summer Like No Other Comes To An End

Happy September all. The X Factor Boot Camp episodes have finally aired which must mean Summer is truly over and Autumn/Winter is a calling.

I didn't agree with all the choices made by those X Factor judges but it'll be interesting to see who actually makes it through to the live show. Loved Ella's voice, rate Nathan aka Starboy Nathan and really rate Carolynn. I also recall sitting through Raylan's audition at the 02, in front of Rita Ora and I remember thinking that although he had an average vocal, he had TV star quality. Let's see if makes it through to the final show. Right, back to Autumn and grab that chunky knit right now, now where was I. Oh yes. September…

So I must admit, I don't feel that I've seen much September daytimes as I've practically spent most of this month indoors and backstage at the iconic and infamous Roundhouse venue in Camden, North London for the annual iTunes Festival. For the past 3 weeks I've been lucky enough to both interview and watch performances from the likes of Pink, Example, Conor Maynard, One Direction, Ed Sheeran, Jessie J, Usher, Emeli Sande etc I've also managed to consume a lifetime supply of popchips in the process ( my main media room snack, thanks Apple ) and big do they taste good! The 1D lads were on form and hyped for their new single and Katy Perry's kissing technique, Olly confessed that his new single contains 'heart attack,; Calvin Harris revealed that he's forgiven Rihanna post VMAs, Jessie J let me into a few secrets about her new book and Example invited me to his aftershow..which is always good! Big thanks to Mandy and the team from Scream PR for looking after me because they must be sick of the sight of me by now. Two more gigs left for me then; two superwomen in music right now- Ellie Goulding and Alicia Keys. Oh and Pink, maybe next time your people will let me get a photo with you. I've only been interviewing you for 12 years and was one of the first people to play you on UK radio but hey…great live show as per!

As I type this, Michael Jackson's Bad 25 album has entered the UK album chart at No.6. Hurrah. Now I'm old enough to remember carefully opening the shrink-wrap on a cassette copy of the album, as a kid in 1987 and yep, it's still one of my favourite albums of all time. The deluxe edition of the 25th Anniversary album contains the audio CD of his Wembley 1988 Bad Tour concert as well as the DVD, released for the first time and wow, what an amazing show. Serious showmanship and serious vocals. Watch it and witness to a man at his absolute best, aged 30, delivering hit after hit. And yes I'm jealous of anyone who was there, as my first ever concert was Michael's 1992 Dangerous Concert. I won the tickets on BBC Radio Wales, six years before I started working there! I must confess, that the emotionally charged, live performance of Man in the Mirror gets me every time and I confess that yes, I shed some tears (once again )when I watched the footage on the big screen, at the London premiere of the brilliant Spike Lee documentary 'Bad 25' a few weekends ago.

That was a special day. Not only did I get to meet and interview Spike Lee on stage, not only did I get to host the whole event at the Odeon West End but I was also able to remind myself why I became a massive MJ fan at such a young age. His stage and work ethic was and is just awe-inspiring. The music; simply the greatest and still as fresh as it was 25 years ago. The BBC are planning to air Spike's documentary before Christmas, as well as the Wembley 88 show, so make sure you watch it. And wow, Spike Lee. Talk about energy, charisma and star quality mixed with humility..

Although I do feel that I need to apologise to Spike, as on our first meeting in his plush hotel suite prior to the screening, he took a shine to my MJ pin badge that I chose to wear for the event.

'Man, I need that pin.' he hollered in front of the Sony VIPS! And I must confess, that I forgot to give it to him. Big thanks though to everyone at Sony for inviting me to host event and thanks to the fans, who a good mix of questions to Spike and John Branca, co-excecutor of the Michael Jackson Estate who also confirmed that a 3D DVD of the History Tour could be the next major MJ release.

In summary then- get your copy of Bad 25! How can anyone deny that The Way You Make Me Feel and Smooth Criminal are anything but pop classics. Oh and if you ever meet Olly Murs, ask him to do his impression of Liberian Girl!

What else? Last week, I spent a a brilliant and inspiring day in Canary Wharf at the offices of BGC; one of the world's biggest brokerages. I worked alongside the amazing team at Help a Capital Child, as the charity was one of 25 that would benefit from money raised from commissions, thanks to a plethora of celebrities who dropped in throughout the day to man the phones. And this was on the anniversary of 9/11. From 7am to 6pm, I chatted to everyone from Leona Lewis to Lewis Hamilton, Mo Farrah to Mitch Winehouse! Our very own Dave Berry and Lisa Snowdon also came down to help, as did Olympic Marc Foster, Alastair Campbell, The Duchess of York, Roger Moore, Joan Collins, The Cheeky Girls, Christopher Biggins and so many more. Not your average day, even for me, I can assure you! But great cause. I'm now looking forward to the annual Help a Capital Child Capital Rocks gig, which is always a good night..

Gig wise, besides iTunes, I managed to watch and hang out with Stooshe last week at their first ever headline show in London's Shepherds Bush. Great vocals and great fun too. Look out for their new single Waterfalls, a cover of the TLC 90s classic. I also celebrated with The Script lads after their album launch Shepherds Bush gig. It was great to speak Danny backstage, as ever and if you haven't got your copy of their new album #3 then get one now! I also spent a good morning , last week, at the Got to Dance auditions. The Sky 1 series returns in January, with Davina back as host and judges Kimberley Wyatt, Ashley Banjo joined by JLS newbie Aston! Cue the screams ladies. So, after tucking in a hearty full English breakfast on Clapham Common at 8am, myself and Natalie from Radio 1 sat down to meet the coaches which was also filmed for the TV show. Aston was on good form and we had a good chat about the forthcoming JLS album Evolution, X Factor and his new girlfriend. Oh and two weeks ago I watched Vida, the new band co-manged by JLS' Oritse and shared a few post drinks with both him and the ladies. All in the name of work of course!

Movie wise- it's all about Skyfall for me. Bring it on. And expect confirmation of the theme song very, very soon. I remember sitting in the green room at BBC TV Centre 18 months ago and being told by someone working on the 007 project that 'Adele had to perform the theme' so watch this space..! And go see Untouchable, btw- a truly stunning piece of cinema.

Right them, I'm off to practice my moonwalk…
