A Brit of a Good Night

I'll get straight to the point. I love the Brits and I love Brits night.

My love and passion for the big event started as a kid, when my understanding parents would allow me to stay up late to watch the biggest pop stars of the day collect weird looking statues. And sing some tunes, after which I would cut out and paste Brit statues into a handmade winners booklet named 'Kev's Popflix.' I know. I know…

In 2005, whilst hosting my old radio show Music Control in Bristol I was finally invited down to London to watch the show. I recall crying that night. Again, don't ask. Two years later I was backstage at Earls Court hosting a UK wide Brits radio special. Highlights of that night included me holding Amy Winehouse's awards as she made me a drink, partying with Scissor Sisters and having a Red Hot Chilli Pepper insult me. And I've been reporting on the Brits and attending the event ever since. Which is 'kinda cool.'

So, last night I was back at the iconic 02 ( where it's always cold backstage- fact ) casually hanging out in the official Brits winners/media room and generally attempting to speak to as many artists as my laminated pass 'legally' allowed! And if the lovely team from Scream PR are reading this, I'm sorry for doorstepping Lana Del Rey. But she looked happy with her win. Oh and if the equally lovely Dawbell PR are reading this, thanks for leading me through the main arena, where I almost knocked over a senior Brits exec in the process. Well, I was carrying Getty's ladder at the time. Don't ask..

Now, as 'we press' nibbled on our cheese sardines and sank ginger beer ( yes, hardcore..) we also welcomed various winners to a small stage for a small press conference type thingy. This was hosted by the bang tidy Huw Stephens, who I've known since 1999 as we worked together at BBC Wales. Tidy. Highlights? Tom Odell looking genuinely happy with his Critics Choice award, Frank Ocean seemed lost for words but managed to compare his win 'to skydiving' and Ben Howard asked if the press wanted the shirt off his back..?!

Backstage media crews get to watch the show on giant monitors in the said media room and in terms of reaction, it was Justin Timberlake's performance of Mirrors, Taylor Swift's costume, 1D's pinball fun and speech plus Robbie's 'Taylor's fit' that got the most attention. As, let's be honest, although the show was slick and incredible..it was seriously lacking in drama, controversy and anything resembling rock and roll.

One Direction's moment in the winners room was frankly surreal and borderline hysterical. Naturally, every lady and gent of the British press wanted to get as close to the lads as physically possible and capture every last syllable uttered. But it was amazing to see the 1D lads rewarded with the Global Success Award ( a one off maybe..?) and to hear Niall showcase his strongest accent ever, with Liam prompting him to remind us all that he is in fact "Irish and from Ireland." And as 1D went off to celebrate in style, with family members and even Simon Cowell himself, it was Emeli Sande's turn to come in clutching her two awards. And again- it was amazing to see Emeli looking and sounding emotional and humbled by her big night.

For the record, however, I would've liked to have seen Olly Murs pick up Best Male.

So, from the 02 to the after-party circuit. And after planning to attend at least 3 events in two hours I managed to catch the amazing Jocelyn Brown sing at the official after show and tube it across town to the Roc Nation party at Hakkasan, Soho. The one Jay Z was rumoured to be hosting! Calvin Harris looked like a total star, holding court as he DJ'd to a room full of rather beautiful people (he actually spotted me and a high-five across the decks ensued ) and Rita Ora enjoyed the amazing champagne as she chilled with the likes of Ne-Yo, Tinie Tempah, will i am, Fazer, JLS, Wretch 32, Simon Pegg and even Noel Gallagher. Looking sharp as ever, a beaming Tinie Tempah told me that his new album is now getting released in September, Wretch 32 said a new single is weeks away and we swapped mutual admiration over our jackets(!), Fazer showed me the photo of his gorgeous new baby and was just SO happy about being a Dad and JLS enjoyed a quick drink before the bar closed! Oh and right at the end, a smiling Emeli Sande arrived, celebrated and almost got crushed in the scrum of the waiting paps outside. At one point, Justin Bieber was about to arrive but alas it wasn't to be. Oh well.

Oh and will I am thanked with his superstar handshake for telling him how much I liked his new remix of Scream and Shout.

Big thanks to the Carl and the Purple PR team, Dara and the Roc Nation crew, the inimitable Rich Jones and all the artists for looking after me. Oh and wow, the Hakkasan club in Soho is well worth a visit. Amazing cocktails and an amazing club.

Thank you Brits, Now, can I go back to be now? Thanks.
